Origin of red wine vinegar

This vinegar is an accidental byproduct of spoiled wine which was discovered around 7,000 years ago. The word comes from the French ‘vin aigre’, literally translating to sour wine. Since then, this method has been used to create vinegar from different raw products, including red wine. Several ancient cultures began using it as a method of preservation. Also, it was frequently used as a condiment. This wine vinegar was attributed with healing properties. Ancient Romans drank it like any other beverage. Today, it is still used as a preservative in pickling and consumed as a condiment.

Commercial production

This vinegar is made from red wine that is allowed to ferment until it becomes sour. Then, it is strained to remove the impurities. Some manufacturers allow it to age for up to two years in order to get a more subtle and muted flavor. Finally, the end product is bottled and set for distribution.

It is unlikely that this can further spoil and become inedible. However, it is best to store it in a glass bottle in a cool, dark place in order to retain the quality and flavor of the product.
