Are you or someone you know diabetic? Diabetes is a health condition that affects more than 34 million Americans. However, around 1 in 5 people don’t even know they have this! Not to mention, the average person doesn’t know much about this illness which can keep them from recognizing tell-tale symptoms in themselves or others.

As a chronic condition, diabetes requires a different eating style and changing how you think about food. One of the biggest lessons diabetics learn is how to learn the glycemic index of foods. If you aren’t familiar with the glycemic index (GI), it is a rating system for foods that ranges from 1 to 100. This scale refers to how quickly a food can raise blood glucose levels. Essentially, if something has a high glycemic index, the body absorbs it faster and, therefore, increases blood sugar levels more quickly. Conversely, foods that rank medium or low on the glycemic index raise blood sugar levels slower than high GI foods.
